Hot fun in the summertime

By Michael Keating

Great jazz music is the last thing that comes to mind when you think of Hampton Beach. Sure, there are polka parties for grannies and gramps, muscle T’s on hairy guys, itsy-bitzy bikinis on semi-hot babes and blaring beats from hot rods, but top-notch jazz musicians? Nah!

Until now.

Stanley Gets Hands-on at Worldmasters Expo

January 14, 2005 (Hollywood) - A sellout crowd was treated to a different kind of Stanley performance at the WorldMasters Martial Arts Expo which recently took place in Studio City, California.

The event, which featured martial arts legends from all over the world, as well as many celebrities and executives from the movie industry, was also a 70th birthday celebration for Stanley's longtime master Byong Yu.

In the middle of an acoustic performance by Stanley, Master Yu came up on stage and requested that Stanley, a Tae Kwan Do black belt, display his martial arts mastery as well. Stanley complied, breaking boards with various kicks, and bricks with his hands.

Fortunately for fans anxious to see Stanley tour this year, he was successful.

Stanley closed the show later in the evening with a unique performance of "School Days" with a band that included Karen Han on the "er-hu",an ancient Chinese string instrument, and June Kuramoto of the band Hiroshima on the kyoto.

The Bottom Line: Jaco and Me

"This picture is so personal to me, but I wanted to share it.

Jaco was a very close friend of me and my family. It seems every time my son Chris's birthday came around, Jaco was at our house. Jaco was very generous- one year he gave Chris all his baseball gear, including his mitt.  At the time it didn't mean that much to Chris but as he grew older he began to understand its importance. Today it is one of his most personal treasures.

I think this picture is from the Bottom Line in NYC in about '84.  Jaco joined my band on stage at that gig for the last number- "School Days."

FLASHBACK

A Vintage Moment

Stanley hanging out with friends and musical greats guitarist John McLaughlin and drummer Tony Williams at Chateau du Vallon in central France (circa 1972) Stanley recalls "It was a gig with the original Mahavishnu Orchestra and a trio that consisted of Tony Williams , Jean-Luc Ponty and myself. It was Tony's band. Also, I think that was the first European gig for the newly-formed Mahavishnu Orchestra. I also remember J. Mac's amps caught on fire! Our trio sounded great! We were very, very loud. It was the only time I played acoustic bass thru a stack of Marshalls."

RTF BANDMATES UNITE FOR GREAT SHOW, CAUSE

(Nov. 3) The Musicians Institute in Hollywood was the setting again for the 4th Annual Stanley Clarke Scholarship Benefit, the most successful fund raiser yet. The all acoustic evening featured a select group of some of the world's greatest musicians. The perfomers for this year's show were Stanley's RTF bandmates Al DiMeola and Lenny White, as well as George Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty and  Patrice Rushen. During the concert three scholarships were awarded to deserving students, and the sold out audience witnessed a thrilling display of master musicianship, highlighted by recurring standing ovations.

After Al DiMeola opened the show with a guitar solo, Jean-Luc Ponty presented a scholarship to keyboardist/songwriter Jasmine Rezai from Germany. Then Jean-Luc introduced Al and Stanley onstage for the first performance by "The Rite of Strings" in eight years. The trio played a set that included "Topasio", "Song To John", and "Renaissance".

George Duke was introduced, and after he presented a scholarship to bassist Bryant Warner of Kansas, he then summoned Jean-Luc and Stanley to join him. Their performance of "Autumn Leaves" was highlighted by an amazing solo by the master of the keys.

Stanley then played an acoustic solo after which he introduced Lenny White. Lenny presented a scholarship to guitarist Srinivas Parthasarathy of South India, and then announced that the next set would feature himself, Stanley, Al, and "a chick".  Patrice Rushen joined three quarters of the legendary group "Return to Forever" for a performance of their Grammy winning 1975 classic, "No Mystery".

Once again, the Stanley Clarke Scholarship Concert was a night to remember for all for who were in attendance.

A GREAT DAY IN NEW YORK

(August 24, 2003 -New York) Stanley's set highlighted the CD101.9.9 Jazzfest on Pier 54 in NYC. The audience of some 3000 music lovers were witnesses to some incredible performances and unforgettable surprises as well.

Clarke's hot 'Bass'

Stanley Clarke, 1, 2 to the Bass () Bassist extraordinaire Stanley Clarke's first studio album in a decade offers an eclectic mix of styles that showcase his virtuosity. The first single is a breezy remake of the Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway classic Where Is the Love, featuring Amel Larrieux and Glenn Lewis. Guitarists George Benson and Pat Martino join Clarke on Just Cruzin's, a stunning tribute to jazz great Wes Montgomery. Two of the more powerful tracks are spoken-word pieces: the hip-hop-flavored title track, with Q-Tip, and I Shall Not Be Moved, featuring Oprah Winfrey reciting the Maya Angelou poem. Throughout, Clarke's agile playing shows his inventiveness has not been dulled by a decade of scoring films.— Steve Jones

Editor's note: The writer of the above review mistakenly listed George Benson and Pat Martino as performers on "Just Cruzin'." The song, however, is a tribute to the aforementioned guitarists, along with the late, great Wes Montgomery.

(Oct 24, 2002-Hollywood) The third annual Stanley Clarke Scholarship Concert at Musicians Institute was again a winner for students and all fans of music. The 3-hour, celeb-filled event was highlighted by some incredible performances and moments. Throughout the various settings, from a straight-ahead jazz combo, to full-tilt rock fusion, to a 22-piece string orchestra, the common thread was great music.

Karen Briggs

The evening opened with Stanley's band of Gerry Brown on drums, Nick Smith and Mark Stephens on keyboards and bassist Armand Sabal-Lecco. Joined by Rayford Griffin on drums, they kicked off with a slammin' version of "Wild Dog." A horn section joined the group for "Goodbye Porkpie Hat."

Then came a brilliant straight-ahead performance with trumpeter Wallace Roney, keyboardist Patrice

Rushen, former RTF band-mate Lenny White on drums, and Benny Maupin on saxophone.

Sinbad emceed the event, and kept the place roaring during some of the set changes.

An acoustic trio of Stanley, Bela Fleck on banjo and Karen Briggs on violin performed a show-stopping rendition of "Song to John".  A fiery performance by Sheila E. highlighted a jam which featured Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Stewart Copeland, and Rodney Franklin among others.

The excitement of the night continued to build as Stanley welcomed to the stage, a contingent of ten of the greatest bass players in the world for an incredible performance of "School Days." The world-class percussion section of Brown, Ndugu Chancler and Stewart Copeland backed bassists Armand Sabal-Lecco, Bunny Brunel, Wayman Tisdale, Jimmy Johnson, Flea, Alex Al, Brian Bromberg, Billy Sheehan, Stuart Hamm, and Marcus Miller.

And just when everyone thought the evening couldn't get any better, Stevie Wonder showed up and played a short set with Stanley, highlighted by a beautiful vocal of his song "Overjoyed" which took off into impromptu versions of "Everyday I Have The Blues." and "Giant Steps."

Prior to the final part of the show, a celebration of Stanley’s movie composing career, Stanley and

Stevie Wonder performs at show

MI president Phil Burks awarded three scholarships on stage to deserving students.

Video clips from Quincy Jones and John Singleton introduced a retrospective of Stanley’s film scores. With Stanley conducting the orchestra and a band, which included Paul Jackson Jr. and Michael Thompson on guitars, they performed music from “Passenger 57” and "Boyz N The Hood”, and then finished the segment with a stirring rendition (in synch to video) of "Anna Mae" from “What’s Love Got To Do With It”.

The closing number had Stanley playing a beautiful acoustic solo with the ensemble. Halfway through, he hesitated, and asked the orchestra to pause. After trying one more time, he laid the bass down, turned to the audience and said, "I think I’ve played too much bass tonight. The hand can only take so much."

Thirteen hours of rehearsal and performance that day had taken their toll. As he walked off the stage, the audience rose to its feet in a rousing ovation. For all who were lucky enough to be in attendance, it will simply go down as a night that they will never forget.

NOTE: The show was taped by BET cable channel and will be aired early next year.
